From Downtown Abbey to Smash and Games of Thrones television has gone in pretty unexpected direction these last few years. And I think that’s wonderful.
If before Glee and Smash you would have told me that I was going to like a TV Show that’s a bit like a modern musical, I would have laughed in your face. But I do! I used to love Glee – still enjoy it, but not as much as I did in the beginning.
But I do love Smash - a new NBC musical drama about Broadway theater in general and a team of people that really want to create a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe in particular.
Smash is actually a musical inside of an otherwise coherent story, the musical numbers are usually taking place inside the rehearsals for the Marilyn show they all work to bring on Broadway - the songs are really great and the people singing them are super talented.
A little bit of trivia - one of the main characters, Karen Cartwright, is played by former American Idol (season 5) finalist Katharine McPhee and the other one, Ivy Lynn, is played by Megan Hilty, a real life Broadway veteran.
Not that this TV show is lacking star power with Debra Messing, Christian Borle and Anjelica Huston as part of the cast.
Even Uma Thurman makes a surprising guest star appearance in a few episodes.
Katharine McPhee as Karen Cartwright as Marilyn
Megan Hilty as her fabulous self
Smash hits all the right notes with a wonderful balance of humor, heartbreak, great original music (composed by Tony-winners Mark Shaiman and Scott Wittman) and even pop moments to lighten things up. I love how it reveals the passion and dedication that creating a Broadway musical requires while also pointing to the back stabbing and drama that goes behind scenes.
I can’t wait for the second season – I hear they got a lot of surprises in store, especially in the new characters, casting and guest stars departments.
Here’s one of my favorite original song in the show called History is made at night! Please listen to it - you won't regret that!
Anjelica Huston is beyond amazing as Eileen Rand!
Two serious reasons to watch Smash: Jaffrey Raza and the sunning Debra Messing!
Is there anybody else watching Smash? How do you feel about musicals?
